Aluminium
After steel, aluminium is the most widely used metal worldwide and the recycled material accounts for around one-third of the aluminium currently in circulation.
24,000 tonnes of used aluminium beverage containers (UBC) were recycled in 1972. By 2005, the amount had increased to over 879,000 tonnes, almost 37 times more.
The weight of aluminium cans has been reduced by 65% over the past 30 years, which in turn has led to less fuel consumption and reduced emissions from transport.
The production of new beverage cans from recycled aluminium requires only 5% of the energy and causes only 5% of CO² emissions compared to production using primary aluminium. No bauxite is required either.
